Teaching Philosophy

My dedication as an educator is to empower my students with knowledge. I strive to provide them with as much information as they can absorb, with the hope that it will stimulate their creativity. More than just imparting knowledge, I see my role as helping students discover their passions. I believe that their college experience is a time for them to explore and develop their artistic interests conceptually, technically, and historically.

Teaching is my calling, and my creative life has been enriched through regular student interaction. I work in the undergraduate studio art program at NMHU, teaching studio, and art history courses. My role in teaching art history has complemented and stimulated student art production. I am usually explaining art and art history to student artists and because my MFA is a studio art degree with an emphasis in ceramic sculpture, I present the history of artmaking from an artist’s perspective. This is particularly appropriate to NMHU’s studio-based program.

My passion for teaching is fueled by the opportunity to work with a diverse student body. The NMHU classroom, with its ever-changing student needs, requires flexibility and sensitivity to a wide range of learning styles. I am committed to accommodating students living with disabilities and have tailored my teaching methods to provide multiple learning tools for students in both art history and studio classrooms. I offer traditional lectures, supplemented by classroom handbooks, and recorded Art History lectures. Assignments are accompanied by written instructions, and my asynchronous Introduction to Art course provides recorded lectures for each lesson. I am dedicated to offering my synchronous Art History courses in a hybrid format, allowing students to access the class wherever they are, through Zoom or face-to-face. In the studio classroom, I provide technical lectures, physical demonstrations, and hands-on instruction. I also have a dozen videos posted on YouTube where I demonstrate methods for working with clay, allowing students to review the material covered in class online. Students also receive a ceramics studio handbook which contains my research, instructional writings, and the studio clay and glaze recipes. My aim is to create a learning environment that is both rigorous and accommodating for all students.

My recent ceramic work departs from traditional methods, where wheel-thrown forms are assembled intuitively and then embellished with surface treatments reminiscent of Neo-Expressionist painting. I’ve embraced the throwing wheel as a tool for creating assembled vessels and I make reference to pottery forms from throughout history. The pieces are further enriched with sculptural elements and layered fragments, creating a unique fusion of form and function. I playfully refer to these as functional paintings, a term that encapsulates the harmonious blend of practicality and artistic expression. The process of creating these works is a balance between loose planning and intuition, with the energetic painting and textural surfaces being fired-on and permanent. Glaze is used as glue, and the final product doesn’t utilize any post-fire material.

The character of my artwork embraces personal expression and makes evident the handmaking process. I have no interest in producing works that resemble factory-made objects. My pieces are usually quirky, with gestural form and an assembled aesthetic. I combine separately created shapes and often re-assemble fractured pieces into new compositions. Concepts that I wish to express through abstract forms and images include implications of connection and sometimes the re-making of the broken into something new and whole. Evidence of fractures, breaks, and the re-building of new wholes, is manifested through physical renderings meant to be read in relation to the human psyche. The imagery celebrates the interior world of imagination and memory through cryptically using the written word, abstract figuration, and provocative titles. Bright colors and seductive textures are employed to draw the viewer in to investigate human experience that is ultimately rendered universal.

I have worked with clay for four decades but have always used the material sculpturally, utilizing hand-building techniques. The experience of being a ceramics teacher for most of my post-graduate life has recently inspired me to include the throwing wheel in my process. For the past two years, I have been working almost exclusively with the throwing wheel to form my artworks and have sometimes produced ‘smalls’ such as cups and bowls for fund-raisers and pop-up sales. The wheel has turned into a vital tool that I had previously spurned, leading me toward a fresh and personal body of work. I re-form fragments and sections into wholes that are activated through expressive, abstract painting, and my works defy traditional boundaries by being: 2-D and 3-D, pottery and sculpture, crafted and conceptual.
